Volvo reveals more details on the new XC90 and SPA platform

Two weeks left until we see the new Volvo XC90, but we have the first external image of the final model. It is distinguished by its daytime running lights to mark “T”, inspired by the Norse god of thunder, Thor. How intimidating? The XC90 will release the SPA platform, which will mark its future. SPA means Scalable Product Architecture and just like in the Volkswagen MQB, it allows multiple advantages: more freedom for designers, space optimized, more passive safety, support for future systems, engines, etc. It is a variable platform, so it applies to different models. The XC90 will have a family of petrol and diesel engines, all two-liter engines. The top end is a plug-in hybrid with a figure of approval laughing gas, 2.6 l per 100 km, but with a combined output of 400 hp. Which imposes the hammer of Thor.

On the other hand, we speak of a seven seater (5 + 2). According to Volvo, this will be the most comfortable of the segment in the third row of seats, passengers remain comfortable for up to 1.7 meters high, and we’re not talking about children. The second row is longitudinally adjustable and can be adapted to enhance the cabin comfort.

Moreover, in Volvo they qualify it as the first SUV in the world that will not have limitations or sacrifices. That’s aiming high. Engineers have had much more freedom thanks to the platform, less restrictive than the previous generation of the XC90. 90% of the components of the XC90 will be entirely new. Volvo has invested in this model 11.000 million (not forgetting that the money comes in from China), and four years of work. They do not share the platform with other brands as it is an internal development.
