BMW i3 Electric City Car

BMW has finally released their futuristic car which is the i3 Electric City. This four passenger car is the most advanced in the category of the electric cars. Unlike traditional cars that are converted to an electric mode, this i3 was created from scratch in order to accommodate the electric engine. It has a new chassis concept which divides compartment, engine and battery. The drive section of the car is made from aluminum parts that are light in weight. The passenger compartment is made from reinforced plastic.  Because it uses lightweight material, it is just below 3000 pounds.

The company offers protection from crashes. The plastic panels can be replaced as well. The engine of the i3 was developed by BMW. This is due to the fact that they want control over the performance.

The specification of the engine is just 170 horsepower and 184 pound-feet torque. It also has a single speed transmission. In order to balance the car, the engine is just above the rear axle. The motor is powered by lithium ion battery found under the passenger’s seat. It helps to keep the center gravity low so the handling and the stability is controllable.

I3 can run about 140 miles per hour which can satisfy the driver. However the top speed is limited to 93 mph so it will not drain the battery right away. A full charge of the i3 can last about 6 hours. This five door hatchback design is just the size of a mini cooper hatch back and fusion sedan from Ford.  The interior can only accommodate fourpeople.

The cargo space is about 7.1 cubic feet however the back seats can be folded if you want more space. The whole design uses transparent glass including its roof. The head lights and tail lights are just like other BMW car models. The wheels are shaped in order to improve the car’s aero dynamics.

  1. i think most electric cars are front wheel drive, so that’s not a bporlem.batteries are, from what i’ve seen, in the trunk, so you’ll have less trunk space, but it would take very deep water to short them out.batteries don’t work as well in cold weather, but they won’t “stall”. what would happen is that your car engine would be working more often, and your gas mileage wouldn’t be as good.

  2. Very nice indeed!Yes bmw is a deffirent class, but the 2jz can achieve sililar and more ppower than the m5 motor with half the complications, and more reliability. The german motors can’t beat the jap motors on simple efective disighn.I’m a bmw fan big time, but after concidering to turbo my m52 motor the 2j just is a FAR better option.Great job to e-shift!
