The new Audi R8 GT Spyder compared to Porsche 911 turbo

One of the cardinal rules in life is the fact that too much is never enough however this can be applied to automotive performance. In the past race cars were described as big beasts run by monster engines. Engineers thought that this is necessary for a strong and fast speed auto.  However when Audi presented their new model, the racing world changed forever. This new Audi R8 GT Spyder is a little like those cars back in the heydays. It is now more of a luxury automobile with a mid sized engine. The idea now is that the less weight, the faster your car will be. The standard Audi is made from lightweight aluminum and they work hard in order to reduce more weight. Part of the weight saving list are the thin body panels which definitely saved a lot of kilograms. The rear wing is made with carbon fiber which helped as well.

The windshield is much thinner so that the car subtract few more grams. They also made the brake system and batteries much lighter. According to auto reviews, the floor mats are also made from lighter materials. Overall even if the R8 GT spyder has a huge V10 engine, it is just about 1,540 kg. The 5.2 liter FSI V10 engine has  more horsepower than other models with a total of 560 hp. The power ratio is 2.75 per hp. They said that anything under is considered as a super class car. It can be said that R8 GT spyder is very fast. In fact it goes 100 km/hr in just 3.8 seconds.

Compared to Porsche 911 turbo, the numbers are much slower but remember this is due to the Launch Control system that the Porsche 911 has. This is the major competitor of R8 GT Spyder. The V10 engine can produce about 8,750 rpm. Despite all the positive things mentioned, the R8 GT spyder has one serious problem. This is something that has plagued R8 every since it was launched. The computer controlled six speed transmission is not a match for the sophistication of the car. The R8 has a single clutch and it is operated by a computer. As a result, the car is much sluggish especially if you go for the lower gears.

The 911 Porsche has a seven-speed PDK dual clutch which can be described as sophistication and performance. The case is, there is nothing that could handle the V10 engine and its all wheel drive system. The GT Spyder is like all R8 models. It is an excellent beast with fierce acceleration and handling. It is truly a sensible supercar with comfortable, calm and sophisticated performance.  If you want this car, it costs about $242,000 which is more than the basic convertible. This seems to be a lot of money for performance no matter how it was engineered.
