Qualcomm, Daimler Team Up Over Connected Car Innovation

Losing focus while driving is one of the leading cause of car accidents. Policies have been in place to sanction drivers who use their phones while driving to ensure total concentration on the road. Still, many drivers continue to use mobile phones, fiddling over gadgets and wires, and risking their lives for the sake of multitasking.

In the coming days, mobile phone slots in the car will not be as mundane as they used to; they will automatically charge devices. At least, this is what Qualcomm Technologies, Inc., and Daimler AG had in mind.

In a strategic partnership, the two companies worked to improve in-car experiences by enhancing mobile connectivity and wireless charging. There will be no need for cables and sockets for charging phones while driving with a car’s built-in technologies doing the job automatically.

Aside from wireless phone charging, Daimler and Qualcomm are also teaming up to design a wireless technology to charge electric vehicles (EVs) and plug-in hybrids without plugging them in.

Qualcomm is working to create innovative communication and connectivity products for the car industry to help make driving experience more convenient, efficient, enjoyable and safe. Meanwhile, Daimler is continuously manufacturing vehicles with the same innovative caliber, including the Mercedez-Benz line of cars.

A number of carmakers have been looking to establish their expertise in software and telecommunication including BMW and Audi. Reports say that rival German car brands are in talks with Nokia.

Wireless charging of phones inside the car as well as wireless charging of electric vehicles will surely place Daimler at the center stage of innovative car mobile communication and remote EV charging.

“It’s important that we remain on the cutting edge of technology and continue to deliver unparalleled experiences to our customers,” said Thomas Weber, Member of the Board of Management of Daimler AG responsible for Group Research and Mercedes-Benz Cars Development, reports quoted. “With this in mind, we are eager to jointly explore possible fields of future cooperation with an internationally leading tech firm like Qualcomm,” he added.
