MINI Hatchback | Urban Legend

From the day that a brand with heavy Bavarian accent made the decision to revive one of the greatest legends of motoring so far, twelve years have passed. Twelve years of success, judging by the 2.8 million MINI sales that have been recorded from 2001 until today. And if the first generation of the car has been the holy grail for lovers of retro, the second manages to offer drivers another level of driving experience.

Denying those who actually wanted to give it the image of a lifestyle product and disappointing those who sought the features of a premium four-wheeled in its specifications, MINI Hatchback got its own separate followers very quickly. These followers will possibly be surprised by the increase in external dimensions or restatement of the stem design practices. The MINI Hatchback 2014 hasn’t lost its cuboid design, the circular-shaped light fixtures and the, skirmished in the four corners of the body, wheels. However, it succeeds in looking new or even alien to the nostalgic past.

Returning to the exterior dimensions of the MINI Hatchback, it has added almost 10 cm in total length, of which 2,8 came from the increased wheelbase. Equally important is the increase in its width (4,4 cm), in contrast to its height that was maintained without significant changes, being higher by 7 mm.

The dimensions of its interior have also grown too. Although the 3,82 meters of new MINI Hatchback do not seem capable of challenging its urban standards and therefore its flexibility within the city, they are enough to show a much more practical profile. A typical example is the boot, which has increased its volume by 30 %, starting from 211 liters.

Of course, to the sense of comfort to be gained from the interior of the new MINI Hatchback, does not only contribute only the significantly more space for passengers and luggage but also the clear improvement on the quality of its characteristics.

The electric power-assisted steering system has been improved, as it has happened in the case of its lighter framework. To move its 1,085 kilos of the Cooper version around, a new three-cylinder turbocharged engine has been used, with a capacity of 1,5 litres. With 136 horsepower and 220 Nm of torque, this engine is ideal for its urban profile. Besides, the engine features systems such as ther direct fuel injection and variable control in the timing and the intake valve lift.

The three-cylinder engine of 1.2 liters, which is used in the One version has similar specs, giving it 102 horsepower. The top version is the Copper S, with 192 horsepower on a 2,0 lt four-cylinder engine.

For the diesel MINI One D and MINI Cooper D, the British brand has the three-cylinder 1,496 mL in the editions of 95 (One D) and 116 hp (Cooper D), which have been kept – in terms of carbon emission- below the limit of 100g / km.

The option to choose between three different driving programs, Green, Mid and Sport, the great start & stop system and the completely new manual six-speed transmission complete the specifications of the third generation of the MINI Hatchback.
