Citroen C4 Cactus | More than just the Airbump

Citroen has chosen a city with tradition in innovation and respect for the environment, such as Amsterdam, for a first contact with C4 Cactus, the latest addition to the House of the Double Chevron. It should be said immediately that this model offers, along with the now famous soft protectors on the sides (the Airbump), a completely new design for the brand, numerous new construction and philosophical elements. The weight, for the first time in years, has gone down for a car in this segment, at an figure below 1,000 kg. That has allowed to reduce the size and characteristics (one example is its brakes) for many constructive elements, and thus reducing manufacturing costs and maintenance expenses.

To solve the equation of a lower budget car with advanced technology and greater desing, Citroen has chosen to adopt a pragmatic strategy, considering the car from head to toe and by inserting things in the list of content to offer the customer only what he really needs. One of the primary objectives in the design of this new C-segment car based on the platform of C4, was the reduction in fuel consumption.

To achieve this, the designers worked on every detail, including the smaller ones. In addition to the aluminum hood, the rear windows with hinged opening and the folding rear seat block in C4 Cactus has saved, for example, in the plant’s Magic Wash washer nozzles inserted into the windscreen wiper (less liquid to be transported in the tank) or, again, the panoramic glass roof high thermal protection – fitted as standard – which weighs 6 kg lighter than a traditional roof with their inner linings. The result is a cut of 200 kg of mass, which in combination with the excellent Cx and the presence of the high efficiency Euro6 motors, make it have a diesel consumption of 3.4 liters per 100 km and CO2 emissions contained in 87 g / km.

Of all the engines, the most interesting is probably the last version of the 3-cylinder PureTech petrol of the series, namely the 110 S & S variant turbocharged engine that delivers a maximum power of 110 hp and a torque of 205 Nm at 1,500 r / min. With this motorization, C4 Cactus offers a weight / power ratio almost like a sports car and a driving pleasure, enhanced by the latest generation of all-electric power steering that also provides a great feeling of security. The performances are, for a model of this range, of high-level Р9.3 seconds to accelerate from 0 to 100 km and a top speed of 188 km / h Рbut with a consumption of 4.7 l/100 km and CO2 emissions of just 107 g / km.
